BRDC Success Stories:
Enzyme/Polymer Complexes
Evolutionary processes have
normally restricted the functionality of enzymes to very specific environments.
But a BRDC sponsored scientist has developed technology that makes it
possible to solubilize enzymes in organic solvents and simultaneously
have the enzymes retain their catalytic activity!
This process has been extended
to incorporating the solubilized enzyme into solid polymeric matrices,
such as polymethyl acrylate, while retaining catalytic activity.
Although research is in a very
early stage of application development, potential applications already
include anti-fouling paints, self-cleaning pipelines and non-fouling catheters
for biomedical applications.
