BRDC Success Stories:
ESR Pig Fecundity Test
A test has been developed
that allows swine breeders to test individual females for the propensity
to produce larger than normal litters.
The test is based on a molecular
polymorphism in the pigs gene for the estrogen receptor. In some lines
of pigs, females carrying two copies of the preferred polymorphic allele
have the genetic potential to produce between four and five more offspring
during their lifetime, compared to those that have two copies of the alternative
marker allele.
This technology was developed
at Iowa State University and is licensed exclusively to PIC International
Group PLC, a BRDC shareholder. To date, PIC has tested over one hundred
thousand females in their breeding herdand has used the test to
select females and males as more prolific breeding stock.
