BRDC Success Stories:
Porcine Embryonic Stem Cell Technology
In collaboration with scientists
at the University of Illinois, BRDC filed the first patent on stem cell
technology involving an animal other than the mouse.
It is this stem cell technology,
and variants thereof, that has resulted in the recent plethora of reports
involving the cloning of sheep, cattle and goats. Stem cell technology
holds out the promise of providing the means by which superior genetic
versions of production animals can be reproduced preciselythereby
insuring a continuous source of the quality traits.
The technology also provides
the opportunity to genetically engineer swine, cattle, etc. in ways that
will allow breeders to produce strains to carry genes for drug production,
high-lean carcass quality, disease resistance and so on.
Equally, if not more, significant
is the proposal to use this technology to genetically engineer swine to
become universal organ donors for swine-to-human organ transplantation.
BRDC has licensed the technology to a shareholder for the purposes of
xenotransplantation, and is currently negotiating licenses for animal
performance and carcass quality.
